This family contains 15 genera and 140 species. It has  a wide distribution in the forests of the Southern and Northern hemispheres. It can grow up to 20 meters tall and grow rapidly. The foliage consists of matte dark green scale-like leaves arranged alternately on the shoots. It is resistant to pruning and air pollution. It grows in a pyramid shape and are the most commonly used hedge plants. It is used as windbreaks in parks and gardens. It can resist temperatures as low as -20 degrees Celsius. They have taproots and can be grown in sunny and semi-shaded areas.
